Rotokawa & Kawerau Geothermal

In 2024–2025, Webster Drilling and Todd Energy were contracted to drill five large-bore geothermal production and injection wells into the Kawerau and Rotokawa steamfields using Todd Energy’s “Big Ben” Bentec 450 t rig.

Over the drilling campaign, depths of up to 3,000 m were reached while managing high temperatures and lost circulation, particularly in the high-temperature Rotokawa field, where formation temperatures exceeded 300°C.

The drilling campaign was highly successful, adding valuable geothermal capacity to Mercury’s electricity generation.
