Since December 2020, Webster Energy Services has provided complete staffing, operations, management and maintenance services for the Bentec Euro 9 “Big Ben” rig on behalf of Todd Energy Limited.
The Big Ben is a 1,000,000 lb hook-load-capacity walking rig with AC power and automated systems. The rig features an integrated top drive, automated pipe-handling system and walking capability for multi-well pad drilling. It represents the current top tier of drilling technology.
Scope of work
Webster Energy Services provides contract rig operations, including full drilling crews for 24-hour operations, rig management, HSE and permit systems for safe and efficient day-to-day drilling operations, and all scheduled and unscheduled maintenance. We manage the rig’s performance and maintain its automated and integrated systems to ensure continuous high performance for the owner.
Operations
Over the contract period, Webster Energy Services has drilled 18 oil and gas wells in Taranaki and five geothermal wells in the Taupō Volcanic Zone, totalling 109,130 drilled metres and more than 27,000 man-hours worked.
The work has included extended-reach drilling to depths of approximately 7,100 m, with high-angle trajectories in Taranaki’s offshore and onshore fields. Geothermal operations in the Taupō Volcanic Zone have included wells in 300°C environments, requiring specialised procedures and crew expertise to manage extreme downhole temperatures and aggressive formation conditions.
Webster Energy Services has maintained continuous operations of the Big Ben rig for Todd Energy across oil, gas and geothermal projects. The rig has maintained high performance standards throughout the contract period, operating in both the challenging extended-reach environment of Taranaki and the high-temperature geothermal conditions of the Taupō Volcanic Zone.
