NOVA 1 Rig Package
NOVA 1 is Webster Energy Services’ 500,000 lb hook-load capacity oil, gas and geothermal drilling rig, built around an American Augers VR500 Super Single drilling unit.
The rig was designed from the outset with automation, safety and efficiency as core requirements. The package includes automated pipe handling, a semi-automated BOP stacking system, an integrated top drive, Volant casing running tool, iron roughneck and rapid rig-move capability.
Rig Specifications
NOVA 1 is configured as a fast-moving land rig, optimised for New Zealand’s oil, gas and geothermal drilling operations. Its 500,000 lb capacity and integrated automation systems enable the rig to drill efficiently while minimising rig-up and rig-down time between wells.
The rig package maintains an unconditionally approved safety case with the WorkSafe New Zealand High Hazards Unit.
Operations Record
To date, NOVA 1 has drilled over 76,000 m across 46 oil, gas and geothermal wells in New Zealand, with wells drilled to depths of up to 4,300 m. Webster Energy Services has also carried out extensive workover and decommissioning operations (P&A) across the Taranaki and Kawerau regions.
NOVA 1 has developed specialist swarf-handling and removal systems for section-milling operations as part of client P&A programmes.
Webster Energy Services maintains a rigorous programme of maintenance, inspection and HSE management in line with all applicable regulatory frameworks, including API and AS/NZS standards.
Impact on New Zealand Drilling
The introduction of NOVA 1 changed the landscape of New Zealand’s drilling industry by bringing automated systems and modern drilling technology to the local market.
Land-based drilling requires maximising drilling efficiency and minimising rig downtime. NOVA 1’s design delivers rapid rig moves and high uptime without sacrificing drilling power or capability.
