Purari Hydropower Feasibility Study Papua New Guinea
Project type
Heli-Portable Geotechnical Investigation
Date
2014
Location
Papua New Guinea
Client
PNG Energy Developments & AECOM
The hydropower feasibility study conducted on the Purari River in Gulf Province, PNG, involved a comprehensive suite of geotechnical investigations. These included remote heli-portable geotechnical drilling and pneumatic packer testing, tailored to the challenging terrain and logistics of the region.
To access the remote drilling sites, the team used both helicopters and boats, navigating the Purari River to reach each location. This approach was essential due to the difficult accessibility of the borehole sites.
The study employed a total of five drilling rigs, each varying in size to accommodate the specific requirements of different boreholes. Over the course of the investigation, these rigs were used to complete 2,000 metres of HQ/NQ core drilling. Additionally, pneumatic packer testing was performed to assess the geotechnical properties of the subsurface materials.
In total, 57 boreholes were drilled across the highly remote and rugged terrain of the Purari River basin. This extensive drilling and testing effort was critical in providing the detailed geotechnical data necessary to evaluate the feasibility of the proposed hydropower project.
